Around two in the morning I dropped off couple of army soldiers at Walter Reed Army Hospital (The place of my birth). They were pissed off due to the fact that they didn't get laid ever since they got back from Iraq, I wished them luck and started heading south on Georgia avenue. When I got around Georgia and Kennedy I got flagged down by a tall big ass brother who was sweating like crazy.
Pass: Can you take me to 49th and East Capitol?
Me: Come on in, let's go.
Pass: My car broke down up the street man!
Me: Too bad.
Pass: You damn right too bad! and no cab would stop for me!
Me: Maybe you look too intimidating?
Pass: To be honest with you, you are one crazy ass nigger!!! If I was a cab driver I wouldn't even pick up my own self but thanks for picking me up brother!
We talked about how Iraq is safer than his neighborhood and old school hip-hop, we were both big fans of the group "Tribe Called Quest". We got to his crib and he advised me not to hang around his hood and he paid the fare. I got the fuck out of there quick before getting smoked, Jumped on 295 towards downtown and back to western civilization.
Happy 4th of July everyone! I will be in Annapolis on Pastor Joe's duck-taped sorry ass boat so wish me luck!
Please don't forget the homeless,
Mad Cabbie.

It is funny, sometimes.
I once ran Taylor (you might not know her, she lives in SW, rides AT LEAST twice daily, but rarely at night) over to a church in Deanwood, somewhere. And yes, Diamond will take her across the Anacostia, all of the SW hackers know her as does at least three-quarters of the rest of the fleet. At any rate, I dropped her and started back. This lady waved at me in front of Burrville Elementary, so I stopped. She got in and did not give me the address, but asked me if I were crazy. I told her 'yes' and asked why she asked. She told me that I had 'no business picking up people over here, you can get killed'. So I asked her 'was I supposed to drive by you?' She said 'no' at which point I interrupted her and asked her where I was supposed to take her.
Then there is Brenda, one of Schaeffer's regulars, who lives on Call Place, SE and goes to Providence Hospital (which takes me home). The first time that I picked her up, she asked me if I were afraid to come to her neighbourhood. I replied to her 'I am here, aren't I?'
Then there was the lady that I picked up on L St., somewhere, who got in, again did not give her address, just started about 'all you prejudiced MF AH cabdrivers' and more profanity. I stopped her and told her 'WHOA, Lady! Lay off, willya'? Let us remember, I DID pick you up. Where are you going?' She gave me the address, then continued about us 'MF prejudiced AH SOB no-good cab drivers'. I then told her that if she kept up that nonsense, she was not going ANYWHERE in my cab. I did offer to catch up to Tesfaye, Abdullah and Igbwe who HAD passed her and she could yell ANYTHING at THEM that she wanted.........
Were you at Diamond when Leroy was still alive? He was this rather dark skinned black American who looked like a fullback and worked at #24 O St., S.E. There were some great stories involving him.
Or have you ever had that guy who rides from various places in Georgetown to Peabody off Georgia? He is average toned and also looks like a fullback. He does not call, though, he hails. He rides all different times of the day. I was back working late at night for a while when Best had King Jive working the microphone in the afternoon. He changed King Jive's shift, again, at some point, so I went back to my normal schedule. Then, I left Diamond.
Diamond used to have another guy in Bloomingdale who rode to downtown who paid twenty bananas, but I had not heard from him in some time when I was still there. He was rather dark skinned, as well, but looked more like a split end than a fullback.
Wierd: DO NOT pick up someone and you are a KKK, DO pick up someone and you are 'crazy'. Then there is the Police. DO stop to pick up someone and you get a summons for not pulling to the kerb, or blocking traffic or a crosswalk or bus stop or something (in addition to incomplete manifest, dirty cab and inappropriately dressed--cab drivers never get just ONE summons in the Demokratik Progressive Authoritarian People's Republik of New Kolumbia; you get a MINIMUM of three to a traffic stop). DO NOT
stop to pick up the same person and you get a summons for refusal to haul.
Although there was this one time that I picked up this couple at night at DuPont. They were going to Columbia Heights (back when Columbia Heights was a pretty rought place) and told me that 'all of these bleep-bleep Africans' had driven by them and how they had approached a couple of the cabs stopped at lights and they locked the doors and said that they would not take them. They went on about their 'scared [posteriors].' and how 'no bleep-blank cab driver' had anything that they wanted. They concluded with 'and look at WHAT DID pick us up!'. Funny though, they shoved the money at me as soon as they got in, before even saying their address then launching into their speech. There was a two-dollar and change tip plus the fare; the total was not bad for DuPont to Thirteenth and Harvard, or somewhere around there.
Enjoy your trip............
Walter Reed, huh? I was born there too!
thurhike: Tribe forever! By the way you take great pictures...
Peggy's mom, there is a 62nd street in DC but a lot of people don't know that!
Phil, I was in and out of Diamond but I know Leroy, God bless his soul! I remember he took me to a place where they serve illegal homemade liquor..every shot you had to chase it with a gallon of water outer wise they might have to drag your body of the joint! Lots of good times with Leroy! We miss you a lot Phil!!!
